Resources
The important 20th Century Architecture and Built Environment of Plymouth is accessible, free and can inspire both children and adults. In this section we have put together a range of different materials, all free to download, to help you look again at Plymouth’s city centre. The teaching resources will be created by working closely with local teachers and pupils and they support delivery of the National Curriculum. These can be modified to suit a particular curriculum area, scheme of work or just used to generate ideas.
New and updated resources are added regularly.
How to use the map and resources
Please note that over time, names of buildings and companies have changed and will continue to do so; in Plymouth: 20th century city the original names have been used at the time the buildings were completed.
Please also note that the map is intended for use as a walking trail, the route shown on the map is a suitable sequence to follow on foot, it cannot be followed in a vehicle. The start of the trail is easily accessed by public transport. Walking from Plymouth train station or, bus stops on Royal Parade - 5 minutes. Bretonside bus and coach station - 10 minutes and approximately 15-20 minutes from Millbay Ferry terminal.
Anyone using the map or other resource material should take care especially when crossing roads and cycle routes. You are encouraged to look up and identify details on buildings or in public spaces, so please be mindful of other pedestrians, and be careful of any obstacles or street furniture.
The Pannier Market, which you are encouraged to enter from New George Street and exit onto Market Avenue is only accessible during its normal opening hours. Please check on the Plymouth City Council website or contact the Plymouth City Centre Company for opening times. The market can also be viewed from the outside.
The inclusion of any individual building does not mean that it is open to the public, the majority of the featured buildings are in private ownership. Please respect the people living or working in these buildings or spaces.
Disabled access
Disabled parking is available throughout the city, please refer to the Plymouth City Council’s website for guidance on the most convenient parking locations. Please note that if you have difficulty walking, or are a wheelchair or mobility vehicle user, to access Tinside Pool (25) from Hoe Park we recommend taking a route from the War Memorial (24) along the Promenade (east side) and via Hoe Road. The more direct route through the park lawns and cliff are steep and there are stepped footpaths.
